Week of July 28, 2008

August 4, 2008 By Stephen Harvill Leave a Comment

Hey everyone, here we go. . . . . .

IN OUR WORLD

Back from Colorado to the Texas heat. It is that time of year and the 100 + days are upon us.

This week is both catch up and production. I am customizing a series of upcoming events to meet the client’s specific needs. It is one of our value propositions to our clients.

It is also update time. Every two months we update our core programs with new material. This keeps our content on the cutting edge in a changing world.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

There is a war being waged between what was and what will be. The battle lines have been drawn and each side holds their position as a strategic gem. The “what was” will tell you that our history brought to where we are. The “what will be” shout across the chasm that in a world changing at an exponential rate we have to do things differently. The reality is that the functional model does both. It looks at its past and plans for its future. It makes adjustments to successful systems and launches new ideas creating a combined model that fits chaotic times. This type of thinking makes a company nimble in its approach to its business.

The fact is that you can only analyze from what has already happened. The past provides the measurement. The future provides the room for adjustment. Think about this – when Apollo 11 was on its way to the moon, it was following a course designed by NASA. But following the course is not as easy as it sounds. The fact is that Apollo 11 was only on the pre-designed course 2.5% of the time. When NASA was analyzing where the space vehicle had BEEN it knew it had to make subtle adjustments to reach its goal. Measure the past, adjust for the future. Apollo 11 made it to the moon by spending 97.5% of its time adjusting to the past.

Measure the past, design for the future!

ENTERTAINMENT

MOVIES: The new Mummy Movie breaks this weekend and brings back the same team as in the Mummy I and II. It has Jet Li in it and might be a mindless entertainment trip on a hotter than hell weekend.

NetFlix Fans: City Lights and Annie Hall – These are the top 2 comedies of all time. City Lights is an old Charlie Chaplin film and Annie Hall is a Woody Allen masterpiece.

TV: The networks are jammed with reality junk and re-run. Try both USA and A&E for great original programming. Monk, Burn Notice, Psych, The Cleaner and others are great entertainment.

BOOKS: The Physics of the Impossible – by Michio Kaku. A fantastic read in easy to understand terms about the stuff in Sci-Fi movies.

MUSIC: I am becoming an Amos Lee fan.

SOUTH OF NORMAL

I love the idea of “lists”. I just saw a list the names the top 10 rock and roll albums of all time. These types of lists are all over the place and normally are designed for nothing more than argument and discussion, but this one has a very interesting methodology behind it. They developed three criteria:

· Only American sales counted

· Greatest hits don’t count.

· They factored in Staying Power (consistent sales and resale’s), Sales Value (cost in dollars at release plus the cost in current dollars), Critical Rating Value (what the critics said and reviews) and Grammy Awards.

I thought this made the list really interesting. So here you go – the top 10!

10) Metallica – Metallica

9) Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin

8) Hotel California – The Eagles

7) The White Album – The Beatles

6) Led Zeppelin IV – Led Zeppelin

5) Abbey Road – The Beatles

4) Physical Graffiti – Led Zeppelin

3) Thriller – Michael Jackson

2) Dark Side of the Moon – Pink Floyd

1) Songs in the Key of Life – Stevie Wonder

Second best, bur it’s hard to get enough…”
