Wintery Week of January 31, 2011

Home / Blog / Wintery Week of January 31, 2011

February 4, 2011 By Stephen Harvill Leave a Comment

Hey everyone, here we go. . . . . .

IN OUR WORLD

Mother Nature had a huge impact on my week as travel in Texas was brought to a standstill by an unusually powerful push of artic air.  Now I know that my friends on the East Coast and in the Mid-West have felt the cold hard grip of the season way more than I have here in Dallas, BUT, that being said I still can marvel at a 95 degree shift in temperature in 48 hours.  On Saturday we almost hit 80 degrees and by Monday night we were in an ice storm with temps plunging to subzero with the wind chill.  Then just to top things off, we get about 4” of snow dumped on us this morning.

All of this happening during our week to host the biggest sporting event on the planet – The Super Bowl!  Probably not what the Chamber of Commerce had hoped.

This gave me an unexpected week to get a bunch of critical project work done.  Everything from program and curriculum design to designing the launch for two huge strategic initiatives around the client experience.

The February newsletter is done and ready.  If you don’t get a copy and want one, just let me know.

Next week, I’m getting out of winter and heading to Las Vegas to participate in one of my favorite meetings of the year!

I sent out the 500th copy of my 2010 Top 10 and Bottom 5 movie list.  That breaks last year’s record!  IF you want it, you have to ask for it.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

I am doing a lot of strategic work around the client experience.  I currently have three core projects for three clients in three different industries.  They are all tied together by the knowledge that the way they position their client experience can impact their success.

We are bombarded by every day client experiences to the point of their impact becoming meaningless.  Heck, you don’t even notice them.  The supermarket, your dry cleaner, the movie theater all offer client experiences, yet for some reason they vanish into a world of vanilla, where everything seems the same.

You should be driving a change initiative focused on YOUR client experience.

Here are a couple of impact experiences to get you thinking:

  • Cirque du Solei – Every year the creative minds behind some of the most spectacular entertainment experiences on the planet are challenged with coming up with something new, something different, something extraordinary.  They have recently used music as the foundation of their experience design.  By picking a single point of design they have created the Love Show based on the Beatles, a show based on the music of Elvis and now they are tackling Michael Jackson’s music.  Great strategy, a single point of inspiration.
  • Newman’s Own – This is the late Paul Newman’s brand of food products.  Each stands for a fresh and unique recipe that gives it profits to charity.  It was Paul’s hobby turned into a business.  Their client experience is in the unique products and their impact on the great world.

It’s time to attack your client experience.  It’s time to take a hard strategic look at what makes you the type of business clients want to engage.

ENTERTAINMENT

MOVIES:  The Company Men.  I’ve heard good things about this movie dealing with downsizing in corporate America.

NetFlix Fans: Monsters:  A low budget, independent film with lots of good buzz!

TV:   FACE OFF: A new reality show on the Syfy network where monster special makeup artists square off in a competition.  Lots of gore fest stuff!

BOOKS:  Invaluable  – Crenshaw:  Another parable style book about learning to focus on your most valuable skill set.

MUSIC: Texas’s own Jack Ingram with a song I really like.

SOUTH OF NORMAL

Can’t play the Super Bowl without footballs!  Here are a few Super Bowl Balls facts:

  • 10 – Number of balls made from one cow hide (eat more chikin).
  • 216 – Number of footballs made SPECIFICALLY for the Super Bowl.
  • 4,000 – Number  of footballs Wilson can make in a day.
  • 700,000 – Number of game footballs Wilson makes each year.
  • 120 – Number of Wilson employee’s in Ada, Ohio.
  • 1941 – Year Wilson became the official supplier of NFL footballs.

Just about time to get this thing going!
